NFA Items

What is a NFA item?  These are items that are regulated under the National Firearms Act of 1934.  These items include Machine Guns, Silencers, Short Barrel Rifles, and Short Barrel Shotguns.  These regulated items are legal for civilian ownership but require some additional paperwork over buying just a standard firearm.  The NFA of 1934 levied a $200 tax to be applied to each item, which at the time was considered very restrictive.  As of January 2026, that tax has finally been eliminated.  This has led to a massive up tick in NFA sales, specifically silencers and short barrel rifles and shotguns.

We carry one of the area’s most extensive selections of silencers from trusted, industry-leading manufacturers.

NFA FAQs

What is the difference between a silencer and a suppressor?

Nothing at all.  Some will argue that suppressor is the correct term because it suppresses the sound, it does not silence it.  For legal purposes the ATF refers to them as silencers.

What does a silencer actually do?

When fired, a gun creates two sounds.  The first being the blast of hot gases released from the muzzle, the second being the sound of the bullet breaking the sound barrier.  The silencer acts like a car muffler and slows the gases exiting the muzzle, mitigating the loud pop.  Combine the silencer with subsonic (slower than the speed of sound) ammo and now you have a gun that is hearing safe and much more pleasant to shoot.

What is the process for buying a NFA item?

Much like buying a gun, there is a federal form to fill out.  This form as well as a set of fingerprints and a photo is submitted to ATF for approval.  We hold the item in store until the approval is complete.  Once approved, you can come in and take possession of the item.

Am I legally allowed to buy a NFA item?

If you are legal to possess a firearm, you would be legal to own a NFA item.

How do I obtain fingerprints and a photo to submit to ATF?

We take care of everything in house.  We do digital fingerprints and digital photos that are properly formatted for the ATF form.

How long does buying a NFA item take?

Completing the ATF form and submitting fingerprints and a photo takes around 30 minutes.  The processing times by the ATF vary.  Current approval times seem to be a couple weeks; however, we have had some approvals in under 24 hours.

Do I have to be a Maine resident to buy a NFA item?

Just like buying a handgun, NFA items must be processed in your home state.  We can sell you the item, but it will have to be shipped to a dealer that is licensed for NFA items in your home state.  We ship NFA items free of charge.

What constitutes a short barrel rifle?

A Short-Barreled Rifle (SBR) is a firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder with a rifled barrel less than 16 inches long, or an overall length of less than 26 inches.

What constitutes a short barrel shotgun?
